"Sherlock" season 4 might be the last installment in the hit mystery program, according to lead star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch, who plays the enigmatic detective Sherlock Holmes, recently caught up with GQ UK and revealed that the series may be ending right after the upcoming fourth season.

"It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately," Cumberbatch explained. "We never say never on the show. I'd love to revisit it, I'd love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we've made something very complete as it is, so I think we'll just wait and see." The award-winning actor, however, added that the idea of not being able to portray the character again seems "galling."

Since "Sherlock" began back in 2010, the series has been nominated for a total of 34 Primetime Emmy Awards. It has also won seven of the said nominations, including outstanding casting for a limited series, movie, or special and outstanding made for television movie in 2014. After season 4 premieres next year, Cumberbatch will be busy working on his upcoming feature films including "Avengers: Infinity War," "Jungle Book" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch also spoke to Vanity Fair to address the conspiracy theories surrounding his family. As the actor points out, his family has been under unfair scrutiny after it was rumored that his child and wife are just parts of a P.R. stunt.

"I think really it's to do with the idea that the 'Internet's boyfriend' can't actually belong to anyone else but the Internet," he told the media outlet. "It's impossible he belongs to anyone but me. And that's what stalking is. That's what obsessive, deluded, really scary behavior is."

The fourth season of "Sherlock" returns to the small screen in January 2017.
