'Sherlock' Season 4 air date, plot spoilers: Series 4 will be the last due to Benedict Cumberbatch appearance in 'Doctor Strange,' 'Avengers' sequel; to feature Jim Moriarty's comeback

The upcoming fourth season of "Sherlock" is set to arrive January next year, with its creators claiming that the Series 4 will be the TV show's best one yet. Unfortunately, the next season might be the last time the fans are going to see its lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprising the roles of Sherlock Holmes and James Watson, respectively.
According to The BitBag, there is a real possibility that "Sherlock" Series 4 will be the last chapter of BBC's successful adaptation of Sir Robert Ian Doyle's classic detective novel. "Sherlock" executive producer and co-creator Steven Moffat revealed that the upcoming Series 4 might be the final season for the show. This is due to several circumstances that bar the production team and the actors from filming the scenes. Perhaps the most likely issue is the busy schedule of Cumberbatch, who is now committed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for being cast as Doctor Strange.
Cumberbatch will be starring in his solo movie this November as the Sorcerer Supreme of the classic Marvel comic book, "Stephen Strange." Aside from "Doctor Strange," the actor is also expected to appear in the future Marvel feature films such as "Thor: Ragnarok" and the much anticipated "Avengers: Infinity War." With the lineup of movies for Cumberbatch, there might not be enough time for the actor to film another season of "Sherlock."
Likewise, his fellow lead actor in "Sherlock," Freeman, is also involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor was last seen in "Captain America: Civil War," and it is likely that he will appear again the upcoming Marvel feature films.
Whether it will be the final season or not, the fans can expect a more action-filled and darker Series 4 as "Sherlock" co-creator and showrunner, Mark Gattis, claims that the next one is "the best season yet" that he and his team have done, Headlines & Global News reported.
Moffat also plays the role of Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of Sherlock in the series. Meanwhile, "Sherlock" Series 4 may raise the possibility of Jim Moriarty return to the show. The villain was not seen in Series 3 as he was killed in the Series 2 finale, although the last episode dropped some major hints that the show's resident criminal consultant is alive and well, planning his bloody comeback in the next season.
Still, there is no confirmation yet if the character will return as the main antagonist.
