'Shameless' season spoilers: Will Lip follow Sean's footsteps? Showrunner Nancy Pimental dished some details for next season

Last Sunday's final episode of "Shameless" season 6 was heart wrenching particularly for Fiona, with her wedding ruined by her high-as-a-kite father Frank. Meanwhile, Lip seems to be at the crossroads of his life. Viewers were left clueless if he is doomed to repeat the sins of his father. For those who have been following the life of the fictional Gallaghers, it is well estabished that the family has never been picture perfect. With that, the unfortunate events in the finale was just as expected.
TVLine recently caught up with executive producer Nancy Pimental where she dished some details on what's in store for season 7. She gave some insights on Lip's alcoholism, Fiona's potential single life and more.
In terms of how Fiona's relationship with Sean will play out in future episodes, the showrunner believes it's too soon to tell. "We just started talking about Season 7, so I don't have any specifics yet... We, certainly, are entertaining more stories with them, but they kind of go hand in hand... But certainly, as of right now, it's the end of them, for sure."
Among the other characters, Lip is more likely to make something of himself but he chose to spiral into alcoholism. "Again, it's where the character told us to go, because even though he's bright and he's been handed so many opportunities, he's still a product of his parents," Pimental said.
Ian seemed to be in a good place with his new job and relationship, but Pimental says it might not turn out too well for him. "I don't think with any Gallagher, we can expect a good thing to last, because the Gallaghers aren't ones that are looking at themselves, taking inventory and controlling their own chaotic impulses. With all the Gallaghers, we can expect anything that's good getting complicated," she explained.
Two days after the dramedy series kicked off last January, Showtime CEO David Nevins announced its renewal at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, California. As noted by Variety, all principal cast members will be back for season 7 and similar to previous seasons of the show, "Shameless" will have 12 episodes. Production is reported to start sometime this year. As of the moment, Showtime has not yet confirmed a release date.
