'Shameless' season 7 spoilers news: Emmy Rossum directs one episode, EP talks about possibility of Fiona being single for a while
Emmy Rossum steps behind the camera for her directorial debut in the upcoming season 7 of Showtime's hit comedy-drama series "Shameless."
Rossum portrays the role of Fiona, the de facto matriarch of the Gallagher family, and The Hollywood Reporter recently confirmed that she will be directing the fourth episode of the upcoming season. The 29-year-old will be the first female cast member to direct in the series, and it will be interesting to see what she will bring to the table for her episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on Oct. 23.
Fiona's story arc is one of the highlights in the previous season particularly because of her shocking wedding day drama. Moments before getting married to Sean, Frank enters the scene and reveals that Fiona's soon-to-be-husband has been secretly using heroine. The wedding did not go as planned, and Fiona was left alone trying to figure out what she should do with her life. Her brother Lip (Jeremy Allen White) also hit rock bottom in the previous season after suffering from a drinking problem and being expelled from college.
In an interview, executive producer nancy Pimental shared what the future holds for the dysfunctional family after the obstacles they faced in season 6. "As we're diving into season seven and, perhaps season eight, which one of the Gallaghers has the tools and the potential to get out of their circumstances and what would that look like?" she said. "Do they end up falling back? It's something we're constantly exploring. It's a huge theme for us and it's a big statement in society — that you can be offered so much and have so much potential but your familial relationships influence you more than anything. The Gallaghers are not the kind of family that's getting any help or therapy so how much can they get out of their own way and their family legacy way?"
The EP also shared that they are considering the idea of keeping serial-dater Fiona away from the dating scene for a while. Since she has grown dependent on relationships, it would be an interesting twist to see how her character grows without relying on a love interest.
