'Shadowhunters' season 2 spoilers, plot news: Showrunner Ed Decter exits prior to production, Dominic Sherwood shares storyline teasers
"Shadowhunters" recently had a major behind-the-scenes shakeup even before filming for season 2 begins.
After helming Freeform's urban fantasy drama for its freshman season, executive producer Ed Decter has departed the series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the network has yet to announce a replacement but filming will still continue as scheduled. Decter's exit will not have any impact on the show's production.
Deadline's sources claim "creative differences" was the reason behind Decter's decision to quit the program. His resignation happened a few days ago and he did not attend this week's table read for the second season. This new development was unexpected because when season 1 wrapped up in April, Decter spoke at length about his plans for the next season in several interviews.
In an interview with Glamoholic magazine, actor Dominic Sherwood shared interesting bits of details on the next season. "I haven't been told a lot but I can tease," he said. "So one, Jace gets worse before he gets better; two, there will be a lot of Clace and Malec; and three, we may be meeting the Seelie queen."
Speaking on the series' growing fan base, the 26-year-old actor admits being pressured at times. "It's a weird mix of pressure and support," he continued. "It's fantastic having people behind us, whatever we do. But also we have to try and put that to one side on set and just worry about the filming, the task at hand."
Based on Cassandra Clare's book series "The Mortal Instruments," Freeform's rookie program "Shadowhunters" follows a young woman named Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) who finds out she comes from a long line of angel-human hybrids who kill demons. Last week, the series won MTV's Best New Fandom Award along with two Teen Choice Awards.
"Shadowhunters" season 2 is expected to premiere next year on Freeform, but the network has yet to announce a definitive release date.
