'Shadowhunters' season 2 episode 5 spoilers: Clary deals with major loss; Katherine McNamara speaks on shocking death

The Shadowhunters attempt to regroup on the upcoming episode of Freeform's supernatural drama "Shadowhunters" season 2.
Titled "Dust and Shadows," next week's episode will see Clary (Katherine McNamara) resorting to extreme measures following the attack on the Institute. According to the official synopsis, the recent attack on the Institute left the Shadowhunters wounded and devastated. In an effort to regroup, everyone must deal with the situation their own way. Elsewhere, Simon (Alberto Rosende) moves home but eventually realizes that it's not so easy to deal with his new life while his family is still around.
Freeform's "Shadowhunters" is inspired by Cassandra Clare's young-adult fantasy novel series "The Mortal Instruments." In last week's episode, the show took a heart-wrenching divergence from the books when a demon killed Clary's mother, Jocelyn (Maxim Roy). Many fans were shocked not only because it's not part of the books, but also because Clary and her mother had just found a way to reconnect again after Jocelyn's long absence.
Back in season 1, Jocelyn was kidnapped and was mostly seen through flashbacks as Clary learned about her family history. Season 2 picked up with Jocelyn managing to return alive and well, but she and Clary had a difficult time reconnecting with each other. The two characters struggled with their relationship because Clary couldn't forgive her mother for keeping her true identity a secret for a long time.
In an interview with TV Guide, McNamara shared that Jocelyn's death is certainly difficult for her character. However, it had to happen because Clary's pain helps her growth as a Shadowhunter. The decision to kill off a character who continued to exist in the novels makes the show more exciting and unpredictable. The actress pointed out that the plot twist also helps to move main characters forward and open new storylines.
The second season of "Shadowhunters" airs every Monday night at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
