It will be a tight race to the finish line as the premiere episode for "Scandal" season 6 will finally reveal who becomes the next president of the United States — Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) or Francisco Vargas (Ricardo Chavira)?

According to the synopsis for the season premiere titled "Survival of the Fittest," the election results for the presidential race will be shocking and will lead to an explosive outcome.

In a sneak peek, it is revealed that projections are extremely tight with the results hinging on one state — California. The presidential hopefuls seemingly have the same number of electoral votes and so it all boils down to the county of San Benito. Olivia (Kerry Washington), seeing that Mellie is extremely nervous, refuses to just sit back and do nothing as she urges those who haven't voted to cast their votes even if they have already won the state of Virginia.

It's evident that the upcoming episode will be extremely nerve-wracking; thankfully, viewers who weathered the political drama's seven-month hiatus won't be waiting for long as the winner will be announced within the first 10 minutes of the installment.

Reports suggest that Gov. Vargas will actually be the one who will emerge victorious in the race for the White House. It seems that the candidate was able to win the hearts of the America when he saved a man from killing himself.

This particular outcome also appears to support what Washington revealed when she appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last week.

The actress said: "We shot the episodes way before the real election, so we were just following the story of what they thought was best for these characters. But it will be hard to believe that we didn't know about our election because it's so surreal what happens on the show."

Following the declaration of election results, the upcoming episodes of "Scandal" season 6 will feature flashbacks to what happened on the campaign trail and just how far Olivia is willing to go to ensure the win for her candidate.

"Scandal" season 6 premieres on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
