'Scandal' season 6 spoilers, plot news: Fitz Grant pursues Olivia Pope; love triangle to ensue?

The upcoming season of ABC Network's hit political-thriller television series "Scandal" will reportedly be kinder to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). After a rather intense season 5, the upcoming season will work in Pope's favor.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer Shonda Rhimes revealed, "We are basically going to start our season on election night. Yes, it is going to play into our season, but we're not going to spend our time playing an election."

The sixth season will pick up where season 5 left off. To recap, season 5 focused on the presidential elections, which was basically a representation of the current election in the United States.

The upcoming season will finally reveal President Fitzgerald Grant's (Tony Goldwyn) successor. Will it be the Republican nominee Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) or the Democratic nominee Francisco Vargas (Ricardo Chavira)?

Moreover, aside from the winners, the next season will feature President Grant smitten with Pope. According to Yibada, when the President officially steps down from office, he will be attempting to rekindle an old flame with Pope.

Christian Post suggested that a love triangle will formulate in the upcoming season. Though the President will now be able to pursue his love interest, it will not be that easy since Pope wants to be with Navy Intelligence Officer Captain Jacob Ballard (Scott Foley).

According to Game n Guide, Foley was able to reveal one major twist next season: Grant finding out that Pope had an abortion. The former President will even confront her about it. Could that change Grant's mind about Pope? Will there really be a love triangle next season?

Without a doubt, "Scandal" is having a lot of drama in the upcoming season. Fans can catch the sixth season of "Scandal" in 2017 on ABC.
