'Scandal' season 6 spoilers: a 'different' Abby in the new season

With the further delay of the "Scandal" season 6 premiere, fans welcome anything that could tide them over. Thankfully, new information about the highly anticipated return of the series has been revealed.
This new morsel of detail comes from Darby Stanchfield, who plays the role of Abby in the series. The actress revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the character remains as Chief of Staff at the start of the season.
However, unlike before, Abby will have a better handle of her authority in "Scandal" season 6. "The difference so far is we see Abby is starting to get comfortable with her power," Stanchfield detailed.
"It's been a long climb, a struggle, and a claw to get into the bubble of the White House. Now she's really running the show and nobody seems to notice; it's great," she went on to say.
"Scandal" season 6 will treat fans with more than just a new and improved Abby. It will also reveal who will succeed Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) as the president of the United States of America.
Of course, it is something that no one from the show would want to spoil, but Goldwyn emphasizes that the result of the "Scandal" onscreen election was not influenced by the real-life one.
"What is beautiful about this season is that Shonda [Rhimes] is taking the show in a whole fresh direction," the actor told Entertainment Weekly of the "Scandal" season 6 premiere reveal.
"The fact it's a counterpoint to this crazy political world that America is going through is interesting but it's not the same. We aren't in reaction to that. Five episodes were shot before we knew anything," he went on to say.
Show creator Rhimes believes that there are no similarities between the candidates in the real-life election to the ones in the series. "So I don't think that you can correlate the two," she said.
"Scandal" season 6 will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. ET instead of the preceding week to give way to the pre-inauguration 20/20 special airing on ABC.
