'Scandal' season 6 release date, spoilers news: Kerry Washington shares photos; Creator Shonda Rhimes assures series will not end after season 6

The cast and creators of "Scandal" recently returned to work for the upcoming season, and Kerry Washington shared photos via social media for the fans to see.

During the first table read last Monday, Washington snapped a photo of her place at the table complete with an "Olivia" nameplate. She also shared a photo with her female co-stars Darby Stanchfield, Katie Lowes, and Bellamy Young alongside Tony Goldwyn. The caption reads: "#ScandalLadies and a weirdo photobomb."

Meanwhile, there were speculations about the show ending after season 6 when Good Morning America's Lara Spencer mentioned it during a segment. While reporting about the "Scandal" cast returning for work, Spencer said: "A little bittersweet, however, because it has been said that this is also going to be the final season."

Series creator Shonda Rhimes quickly addressed the matter via Twitter and set the record straight. "Whoa, @GMA: I never said this was the final season of #scandal. Way to make me spit out my coffee!" Rhimes wrote in a post dated July 27.

Later on in the show, Spencer apologized on air for the false information she delivered and corrected herself, saying: "We said that this was the last season of Scandal. Shonda has weighed in, she just tweeted, and she said we made her spit out her coffee. My apologies."

"She said she has an ending in mind, but that ending is not happening this next season ... So, correction: Ending in mind, but when that ending is happening we don't know. So, to be continued on the Scandal scandal. More Scandal ... I'm sorry I made you spit out your coffee," Spencer added.

The sixth season will see Mellie Grant and Jake Ballard's Republican bid against Francisco Vargas and Cyrus Beane. The fifth season drew inspiration from real-life current events, with Mellie Grant as a female vying for the U.S. presidency. Hollis Doyle, a Texas lobbyist inspired by Donald Trump, also joined the presidential race but later on dropped out.

"Scandal" season 6 is expected to premiere on 2017.
