'Scandal' season 6 premiere date, spoilers: Official trailer reveals election results are in

"Scandal" fans have a reason to celebrate as the premiere date of the sixth installment of the drama series has already been revealed.

According to reports, "Scandal" season 6 is scheduled to air its pilot episode on Jan. 19, 2017. It's just a few months away so to stir up excitement among the fans, its home network released an official trailer featuring some of the thrilling and explosive events that will take place in the upcoming new season.

As mentioned in the teaser, the political drama series will continue the events that happened in season 5. Fans may recall that the previous season revealed the presidential candidates and their running mates. The show's upcoming elections will be battle between Republican nominee Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) with vice-presidential choice Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) and Democratic candidate Francisco Vargas (Ricardo Chavira) with his vice-presidentiable Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry).

The race to the White House is going to turn up lots of tension and drama, and fans can expect to see that in the first episode as season 6 will kick off with the election night. "We are basically going to start our season on election night," executive producer Shonda Rhimes said to Entertainment Weekly. "Yes, it is going to play into our season, but we're not going to spend our time playing an election," she added.

The trailer also revealed that the pilot episode will immediately show the results of the election but typical "Scandal" will have a twist in just "the first 10 minutes" of the new season. There's also a literal explosion and a heated argument between Mellie and Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington).

"Scandal" season 6 will join ABC's so-called TGIT lineup which airs every Thursday along with other returning Rhimes series, "Grey's Anatomy" and "How To Get Away With Murder." The series sixth run could have aired earlier but it had to be bumped up from its usual fall debut for main star Washington's pregnancy leave.
