'Scandal' season 6 news: Liv joins Mer and Annalise for the return of ABC's complete 'T.G.I.T.' block

Shonda Rhimes' TV block is finally complete again with Kerry Washington and "Scandal" getting back into the mix following a half season of absence.
Olivia Pope reunites with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) as the three femme fatale celebrate the new year with a brand-new TV spot for "Thank God It's Thursday" primetime slot for ABC. In just half a minute the band of women gathered together in a couch with a big bowl of popcorn and wine to tune into the now famous Rhimes show portfolio.
"Scandal" season 6, which was supposed to air last year alongside "Grey's Anatomy's" 13th outing and "How to Get Away with Murder's" third was ultimately moved for a midseason debut to give way to Washington's second pregnancy. The move was quite different from how the political thriller handled her first one in which they decided to push forward with their original time slot. The baby bump, however, was dealt with using a lot of camera angle work and prop-utilization.
Late as Liv and her associates may be to the party, it does not mean that "Scandal" is not bringing the big guns to the show. In fact, the premiere episode is tipped to be the first building piece of the overall plot of the season, with the announcement of the National poll results. To say that the campaign period has been convoluted is an understatement and the show is ready to wrap up the narrative and move on with the repercussions of the elections. Former First Lady turned Senator Mellie (Bellamy Young) and Francisco (Ricardo Chavira) Vargas are both in contention to replace Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) in the Oval Office and it will only be an interesting path moving on regardless of who nabs the country's next presidency slot.
Marketing for the upcoming installment banks on the switch in terms of power-holders in the series, which could possibly end with Varga eventually taking the post. However, it is also arguably compelling to see Mellie come out of her cheating ex-husband's shadow as she succeeds him from the job that he had held for two terms. To make matters more complicated, Liv, who was Fitz's former campaign manager and lover, also played a major role in helping Mellie become the next TV President.
"Scandal" season 6 is set to kick things off on Jan. 19, 9 p.m. It is preceded by the return of "Grey's Anatomy" at 8 p.m. ET and then succeeded with new episodes of "How to Get Away with Murder" at 10 p.m. ET.
