'Scandal' season 6 episode 2 spoilers: Flashback during election campaign shows how far Olivia will go to win, EP speaks on shocking premiere episode

Flashbacks reveal how far Olivia (Kerry Washington) will go in order to get what she wants on the upcoming episode of "Scandal" season 6.
Titled "Hardball," next week's episode will give viewers a glimpse of Olivia's competitive side. According to the official synopsis, flashbacks reveal what happened on the campaign trail before the premiere's shocking election results. As the episode unfolds, viewers will see how far Olivia was willing to go in order to win. Elsewhere, Abby (Darby Stanchfield) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) are forced to deal with a national crisis that has never happened before, and the gladiators are hell-bent on finding answers about the incident.
Thursday's season 6 opener showed Pennsylvania Governor Francisco Vargas winning over Senator Mellie Grant. However, during his acceptance speech as the 45th President of the United States, Francisco was assassinated. Many fans have noticed Melli and Francisco's similarities to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, but ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey was quick to clarify that "Scandal's" election storyline was not patterned after real life.
"Here's the thing: It is a fictional story about fictional characters in a fictional world, that very much builds off of everything we did in Season 5," Dungey said. She went on to explain that there may be a few similarities to current events on the surface but once fans look closely, "there are not."
As for the shocking premiere, Dungey pointed out how the episode is completely different. The exec noted that it's actually about Cyrus' complicity after the murder of his running mate. "While I feel like, 'Sure, there's a tiny bit of an eerie something,' the story we're telling is a very different story. Again, it's a fictional story in a fictional universe. And it's a great story for Scandal," Dungey added.
The sixth season of "Scandal" airs every Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
