Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date: Brand New Design Expected On March 1 Launch

Will Samsung unveil its new and "more modern-looking" Galaxy S6 smartphone for its "Unpacked" event slated on March 1?

Industry sources are convinced that the Korean tech giant will reveal its latest flagship phone in the event to be held in Barcelona, Spain, next month.

In a report, CNN Money predicted that the unveiling of the Galaxy S6 will help Samsung arrest its slumping smartphone sales, which slipped by 27 percent last quarter.

"The wildly popular Galaxy S has been the flagship for Samsung's smartphone lineup for six years. But as competition has increased, the Galaxy S's stranglehold on the Android market has weakened," CNN Money's contributor Ewan Spence said.

"The sales slump has reportedly served as a wake-up call for the company. The Galaxy S6 is expected to be drastically different from the previous Galaxy S models," Spence added.

It has been three years since Samsung made Galaxy S its flagship smartphone, which was followed by two more models that looked slightly different from the other.

CNN Money said Samsung could be replacing its plastic covers with metal shells to keep up with close smartphone maker competitors, who have been using fancier, shinier, more durable metal exteriors.

"The company has taken up a new design principle called "Project Zero," signifying a fresh start for the oft-criticized – but well-selling –smartphone. A hint of what could be coming can be found in the well-regarded Galaxy A5, a metal version of the Galaxy S4," Spence explained.

"But beyond the materials Samsung is likely to use, the phone is also expected to look more modern, including a super-thin bezel, that makes the screen appear to go edge to edge," he added.

CNET Korea appeared to have confirmed this assumption when it leaked photos of a variety of body styles for the much-anticipated Galaxy S6.

The tech site showed 3D-rendered images of five phones starting from a standard-looking model of Galaxy S6, followed by a Verus-branded cover, one of the top South Korean smartphone cover makers.

"But the fourth and fifth handsets show that Samsung may have an Edge version of the S6, echoing the sloped-screen designed of the Galaxy Note Edge," CNET Korea said.

"Looking closely, the image seems to indicate that this version will be dual-edged: on the fourth phone, the right side has a curved edge while the fifth show the same on the left, which suggests both sides are wrapped by the display," it added.

CNET said Samsung could also be making a physical home button in a metallic and thick-looking bezel, which is very similar to the silver shape that has been the focus of Samsung's "Unpacked" invites.

Samsung is also expected to replace a lot of useless and unnecessary apps and redundant voice controls in its Galaxy S6, which will offer an add-on software for optional download that could free up the phone and leave only the apps that a particular user wants to use.
