A recent media report indicates former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may announce her presidential bid for 2016 earlier than previously thought.

A New York Times report from Monday indicates that Clinton may announce her intent to run for president sooner than 2015 if Democrats lose footing in November's midterm elections.

The media outlet reports that several members close to Clinton, also a former First Lady, said that "If Democrats lose control of the Senate in the midterm elections, the party may need to quickly pivot to the presidential campaign."

"The Democratic Party would look to Mrs. Clinton 'as its Noah's ark,' a vessel on which voters and donors could channel their enthusiasm and frustration, said one of these people, who could discuss the internal deliberations only on the condition of anonymity," the New York Times adds.

Clinton previously hinted at a possible presidential run over the summer while speaking in Iowa to promote Iowa Senator Tom Harkin.

At the fundraising event, Clinton said "It is true, I am thinking about [a presidential run]."

"But for today, that is not why I am here. I am here first and foremost for Tom [Harkin], for Ruth [his wife] and for the great candidates that you have a chance to elect," Clinton added, as the crowd encouraged her to "just do it" and run for president.

The former Secretary of State previously said that she would not announce a possible presidential run until after January 2015.
