'Reign' season 4 updates, news: More complicated life up ahead for Mary in upcoming season?

Rumors regarding "Reign" season 4's fate have been shushed. The series will return, but rather than a fall premiere as what its fans have been accustomed to, the period drama chronicling the life, loves, and struggles of Mary, Queen of Scots, will see a mid-season premiere.
Apparently, new shows and massive changes in The CW's schedule prompted the network to include the show in its midseason line-up along with fan-favorite supernatural drama "The Originals." However, if speculations concerning the upcoming season's plot are to be believed, the series' return will be worth the wait.
As if Mary's (Adelaide Kane) life isn't already complicated, it is said that "Reign" season 4 would be serving double the drama in the form of new characters who would play key roles in Mary's life. As it is, Mary is already struggling with the devastating passing of her husband Francis (Toby Regbo) due to illness.
While she deals with that, she would also be dealing with her cousin Elizabeth who is bent on overthrowing Mary. Moreover, there will be new people who will come into Mary's life, although it remains to be seen if these men would compete for Mary's affection or if they will sweep into her life one at a time.
Deadline has confirmed that "The Midnight Man" star Will Kemp will be joining the fourth season as Lord Darnley. However, if the story would remain true to history, he might not stay on the show for long since real-life Lord Darnley was murdered within a year of being married to Mary.
Kemp was initially signed for three episodes with an option for a longer stint on the show, which would be logical, considering three episodes might not be enough to cover a yearlong marriage. There is also the possibility that Mary's imminent pregnancy would be tackled in the fourth season. In real life, Mary's marriage to Lord Darnley bore a son who eventually became King James I.
Mary's third husband, the Earl of Bothwell, will also figure in "Reign" season 4, but apparently, the show hasn't cast an actor for the part yet. Also expected to join the fray is an older version of Henry, Charles' (Spencer MacPherson) brother and Catherine's (Megan Follows) son and Narcisse's (Craig Parker) son Gabriel, who is described as a scoundrel. Leesa, another one of Catherine's children, might be dropping in, too.
With these characters expected to become part of the show, fans could expect lots of potential heartbreak and tears mixing with the drama and intrigue that is Mary's life.
"Reign" season 4 is expected to return something in January on The CW.
