'Reign' season 4 release date, spoilers news: Premiere set for early 2017, plot to explore Mary's second marriage

The season 3 finale of "Reign" left fans wanting to see more of Queen Mary (Adelaide Kane) as she moves forward with her plans to take the throne from Elizabeth with the help of Gideon (Ben Geuren). Unfortunately, it might be a while before the top-rating historical drama returns to the small screen.

Much to the dismay of fans who are used to seeing a new batch of episodes every Fall,  the series has been moved to premiere early next year. Season 4 will touch on the story of Mary's life as a married woman once more as she will wed Lord Danley (Will Kemp). Danley has a "wildly ambitious mother" who will do anything to secure her son's crown and it ill be interesting to see how her relationship with Mary play out.

Based on real historical accounts, Queen Mary got married to Lord Danley during her time in power. Danley has a blood-claim to the throne as well, but it remains to be seen how the two will meet and what kind of dynamic they will have. Kemp has been confirmed to star in three episodes with the option of being a series regular which means that their relationship will be one of the plot's highlights.

Meanwhile, season 3 saw the death and departure of two important characters in the story: Lola (Anna Popplewell) and Bash (Torrance Coombs). Lola was executed after Elizabeth (Rachel Skarsten) found out that she betrayed her, while Bash was written off in the story after actor Torrance Coombs joined a new series on ABC. This might pave the way for the introduction of more new characters, but the network has yet to announce the latest cast additions. Casting is currently underway for one of Mary's suitors Bothwell, Narcisse's son Gabriel and an all-grown Henry.

"Reign" season 4 is expected to air sometime next year on The CW.
