Kentucky Senator Rand Paul announced this week that he will be running for president in the 2016 election.

Paul made his announcement Tuesday, both on his official website and in a speech delivered in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Kentucky Senator first announced his plans for a presidential run on his official website, saying: "I am running for president to return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government."

The announcement was accompanied by a video message that featured Paul's wife, Kelley, discussing how she met her husband, his early life and his career as an ophthalmologist. Kelley also described why she believes her husband is a good presidential candidate, saying he has the "energy, ideas, and honesty" to pursue the nation's top political office.

Paul also made his announcement during a rally in Louisville on Tuesday, where the conservative politician said that both political parties are to blame for the United States' rising debt.

"Today I announce with God's help, with the help of liberty lovers everywhere, that I'm putting myself forward as a candidate for president of the United States of America," Paul said at the rally.

"The Washington machine that gobbles up our freedoms and invades every nook and cranny of our lives must be stopped," Paul continued, adding "Both parties and the entire political system are to blame."

Paul is set to begin his campaign trail immediately with stops in Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire and Nevada. Recently, Texas Senator Ted Cruz also announced his plans to run for president on the GOP ticket.
