'Preacher' season 2 spoilers, plot news: EP Sam Catlin confirms new characters, Herr Starr to be introduced, Jesse continues search for God

After an early renewal from AMC, "Preacher" recently wrapped up with a shocking and twisted finale. The waiting game starts for season 2, along with new characters set to enter Jesse's life.
Season 1 left off with the town of Annville, Texas being completely wiped off the map after a huge explosion from the meat processing plant. To make matters worse, Jesse discovers God is missing — leaving them without any clue on how to move forward.
Executive producer/co-creator Sam Catlin recently caught up with Deadline and he mentioned everything that happened is "a direct result of the absence of God." Furthermore, Catlin confirmed that nearly all of the characters were killed including Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley) and Emily (Lucy Griffiths). Aside from Eugene Root a.k.a. Arseface who is currently in Hell, only Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy survived. This opens up the possibility for new characters to be introduced. "In the end, we had to clear the deck, there's so many great characters from the comic to come," Catlin said.
Looking back at the first season, the co-executive producer explained how the events in season 1 tie up with the upcoming new storyline. "In the first season we really wanted to establish Jesse's relationship to God and lack thereof," Catlin continued. "He is disillusioned and losing his congregation from the beginning. We needed to put Jesse's journey into context, and his mission for next season."
Referred to as "the figure in white" by Catlin, reports say that famous comic book character Herr Starr will be introduced next season. He was first seen in episode 3 as a shadowy figure, but the one-eyed Grail enforcer will finally make his debut appearance in season 2. Additionally, the two men responsible for murdering Jesse's father will be introduced.
"Preacher" season 2 will have an expanded 13-episode run, and the supernatural drama is slated to premiere in 2017.
