Pope Francis recently spoke out regarding equal rights for women and men, saying that it's "pure scandal" that men can be paid more than women for doing the same job.

Francis made his comments Wednesday during his general remarks at a mass in St. Peter's Square, referencing Christian teaching relating to marriage and encouraging Christians to demand the "radical seed of equality" for both genders.

"Why is it taken for granted that women must earn less than men? No! They have the same rights," the pope told those gathered in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday.

"The Christian seed of radical equality between men and women must bring new fruits," the pope told the crowd, as reported by Vatican Radio.

"The witness of the social dignity of marriage shall become persuasive," he continued adding, "precisely by this way: the way of witness that attracts."

"For this reason, as Christians, we must become more demanding in this regard: for example, [by] supporting with decision the right to equal retribution for equal work; disparity is a pure scandal," the pontiff concluded.

The pope was quick to note that demanding equal pay for men and women does not necessarily mean that both sexes should be treated as equal in all regards.

"At the same time, we must recognize the maternity of women and the paternity of men as a perennially valid treasure, for the benefit of children," the pope said.

The larger theme of Pope Francis' speech on Wednesday was regarding the importance of marriage, with the pontiff saying that: "Today, society is confronted with fewer marriages. [...] These broken marriage bonds affect the young most of all, as they come to view marriage as something temporary."

"In truth, we know that almost every man and woman desires a secure and lasting relationship, a stable marriage and a happy family," he added.
