An early morning shooting at a university library in Florida left three students wounded and the gunman dead, police say.

The shooting took place around 12:30 a.m. at Strozier Library on the main campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee. Students reportedly barricaded themselves with desks and hid in between book aisles as a shooter entered the building and began opening fire.

"*FSU ALERT!* Dangerous Situation! Main Campus – Tallahassee," a message sent to students by the FSU alert system reads. "Seek shelter immediately, away from doors and windows."

The library was reportedly full of at least 300 students, who had stayed up into the early hours of the morning studying for exams before the holidays. The gunman was reportedly shot by police after he opened fire on authorities from an area near the library.

"He was challenged by the officers and given commands to drop his weapon, but the male fired at the officers," a police statement read. "The officers returned fire, killing the gunman."

Three students were reportedly injured due to Thursday morning's incident, with one listed as being in critical condition at the local Tallahassee Memorial Health Care hospital.

Police have reportedly described Thursday's incident as "isolated" and have said no other suspects are suspected of being involved in Thursday's attack.

Students present during the shooting have since recalled the incident to local media outlets.

"I ran for my life," Allison Kope, a freshman at the college, told the Associated Press. "I ran right out the backdoor. My laptop and everything is still in there. It was shock. It was just instinct. You don't think about anything else, you just go."
