Three suspects are being held in a recent New York City shooting that left two police officers wounded but in stable condition.

The incident happened Monday night at around 10:30 p.m., when two officers responded to a robbery of a grocery store in the Bronx borough of the city. Upon arriving at the scene, police witnessed two suspects fleeing the grocery store, and the officers exchanged fire with the suspects at a nearby Chinese restaurant.

The two police officers, Andrew Dossi and Aliro Pellerano, sustained injuries to their chest, lower back and arm, although they are reportedly expected to make a recovery.

Police have taken into custody one suspect who visited the New York Presbyterian hospital shortly after the robbery took place, seeking medical care for a bullet wound to the back. Although the suspect told medical staff that he had been robbed, police believe he actually served as an accomplice to the gunman who shot at Dossi and Pellerano, and had been injured when his fellow robber exchanged fire with police.

Authorities are also reportedly questioning two other men who are also believed to have been involved in Monday night's robbery. One of the men reportedly matches the description of one of the suspects caught on security cameras during the attempted heist.

New York City Mayor Bill deBlasio, who has been receiving criticism due to his strained relationship with the NYPD, commended the two officers for their bravery while speaking from the hospital on Tuesday.

"These officers did something that was extraordinarily brave this evening," deBlasio told reporters at the hospital in the early morning hours of Tuesday.
