The decade-long saga of "Pokemon Uranium" has finally come to an end.

After working on the game for years, the dedicated fans behind "Pokemon Uranium" have decided to stop supporting it in any capacity. All download links were removed for good, immediately shutting down the game's online services.

"Unfortunately, as Pokemon Uranium is a fan game, there is a limit to how far projects such as these can go," the developers wrote on Twitter last Wednesday, Sept. 21. "We are therefore ceasing development on this project. As such, we, the creators of the game, will no longer be offering game downloads, updates, online services, or support for Pokemon Uranium."

In the statement, the team also expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans. They mentioned that they will be moving on to other projects, but didn't say anything on the reason behind their decision to close the game.

Although there's no indication that Nintendo played a role in this recent development, there are rumors that the company did have a part in the game's end. Just this year, the Big N has taken down numerous fan-made projects including a Metroid II remake—which was created to celebrate the franchise's anniversary—and a parody game which combined Nintendo's iconic Super Mario with No Man's Sky.

"Pokemon Uranium" was launched in August after nine years of development. Nintendo previously managed to get the project out of the web not long after its launch, but fans continued to share download links with each other. The developers also continued to support the game with updates and online functionality. As noted by reports, Nintendo might be wise to the fact that the dev team is still working on the project, which led the company to be more aggressive with its legal actions.

To date, the game's official website is still down and the dev team no longer posted updates on its Twitter account.
