'PlayStation VR' release date news: Taking PS4 gamers to virtual world; Launching October 2016

Sony

Sony Corporation has confirmed on Tuesday at the Video Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that the virtual reality headset for PlayStation, called "PlayStation VR," will be launched in October with a unit price lower than its virtual reality gadget competitors.

For a suggested retail price of $399, PlayStation 4 users can now experience the game action firsthand in virtual reality. This is $400 cheaper than "HTC Vive" and $200 cheaper than the Facebook-owned virtual reality competitor, "Oculus Rift," which was announced a day earlier in the same conference.

"We firmly believe getting the price right is crucial to driving consumer adoption of any new technology," Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said.

House also said that more than 230 developers are building content for the PlayStation VR headset and more than 50 games are expected to be available from its October release until the end of the year. Users can also download the Playroom VR at the PlayStation store with six free games to choose from.

It was also announced that Sony has teamed up with EA Sports and Lucasfilm for a Star Wars Battlefront game that will be released exclusively for PlayStation VR.

"PlayStation VR," previously tagged as "Project Morpheus" during its development, was scheduled for release in the first half of this year, but the announcement of October release would mean a delay in their initial target. However, House said in a blog that they wanted to take the time needed to aim a quick mass adoption for their new product and have enough number of supplies to match the public's demand.

It was shown during the event that Sony's virtual reality headset exhibits a 5.7″ OLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate, a 360-degree head tracking sensor with 9 LED's, a field of view that is approximately at 100 degrees, and latency less than 18 milliseconds, meaning that the interval between the time the user moves his head and the time the correct image is shown will be very limited.

It was revealed in a tweet that the PlayStation Camera, which is required to use PlayStation VR, is not included in the package and has to be purchased separately.
