'Penny Dreadful' season 4 news: Renewal not happening

Much to every "Penny Dreadful" fan's surprise, the show ended without any prior notice. What's worse was that fans were caught off guard by the death of the heroine Vanessa Ives (Eva Green).
At the Television Critics Association summer press tour earlier this month, Showtime programming president Gary Levine explained that it has always been writer John Logan's plan to cap off the series with the death of the character.
Levine explained that they calculated their decision to end the show with such a bold move. The president emphasized that they have made risky choices for the show in the past, so ultimately they decided to do one last bold move for the show's finale. They decided to kill off the main character, end the season and then announce that the show is over.
It was midway through the second season that Logan realized the necessary fate of Ives. In an interview with Variety, Logan admitted that Ives' loss of faith in the second season necessitated her finding peace with God.
Again, it has been no secret among the showrunners of "Penny Dreadful" that Logan has already plotted the fate of Ives. The showrunners tried to explore the possibility of another season following Ives' death. However, they knew that the show will lose its authenticity if they forcibly push the show for another season. Hence, they chose to conclude "Penny Dreadful."
Fans are still stunned by this decision and apparently, so is the cast. Billie Piper, who portrayed Lily Frankenstein, was definitely surprised by the series' sudden end.
"As actors, it was pretty upsetting. But I think in a way, it sort of worked – everyone's story got tied up, and no one was expecting it to be the end. So they sort of won in every way. It was just very sudden," Piper said to Digital Spy.
