British horror TV series "Penny Dreadful" has been confirmed for a season renewal and it will premiere on May 1. The network recently announced the news during the last Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, where they also mentioned that the show will have nine episodes.

Season 2 left fans devastated as Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) said goodbye to Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) in the finale. However, Collider reports that season 3 will actually be the opposite, with the show featuring more of Hartnett's character. The actor explained that Ethan had to leave Vanessa out of love, but he will eventually be back to reunite with her. Reports say that the show will have a strong theme of revenge, particularly involving the Bride of Frankenstein/Lily along with Dorian Gray. The two characters are speculated to steal the spotlight next season, where their characters will further develop all throughout the season. According to TVLine, new cast members will spice up the plot, including Shazad Latif, Christian Camargo, Sam Barnett, Wes Studi and Jessica Barden.

On another note, the show is currently hosting a fan art contest as a promotion for the third season. Tech Times reports that Showtime will give $1000 to one lucky fan who will win the competition. Along with the cash prize, the winner will also receive "Penny Dreadful" merchandise, and an opportunity to have his/her piece be used on the show's official poster, product or comic book cover.

As noted by Zap2it, the official synopsis for the upcoming season 3 pilot episode reads:

"With Ethan, Sir Malcolm and Dr. Frankenstein now scattered around the world facing their own demons, a shattered and despondent Vanessa seeks the help of Dr. Seward to battle a new evil."

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 returns to TV screens Sunday, May 1, 10:00 p.m. EST on Showtime.
