'Outlander' season 3 spoilers, plot news 2016: Production in full swing; Bloody Sam Heughan spotted while filming Battle of Culloden
Production for "Outlander" season 3 is currently in its early stages, and lead star Sam Heughan was recently spotted in Scotland while filming for an episode featuring the re-enactment of the Battle of Culloden.

In the behind-the-scene photo, Heughan appears to have blood dripping from his left temple. The actor wore a thick black jacket over his costume to stay warm while taking a break. Bloodied and stern-faced, the images show Heughan walking across the moor as he waits for his take. According to BBC, the battle scenes have been filmed in a field located in Greengairs. They couldn't shoot scenes in Culloden, near Inverness since it is classified as a war grave. From Scotland, the cast and crew will move to the Caribbean and North America to film the rest of season 3. Newtonmore's Highland Folk Museum and Doune Castle near Stirling will also be a setting for some scenes.
As Daily Record points out, hundreds of extras were hired for the said battle scenes which involved a lot of special effects including fire and smoke. For the uninitiated, the tragic Battle of Culloden transpired in 1745 and marked the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising. It is also where the Highland clan culture of Scotland met its end.
"Outlander" revolves around a World War Two nurse named Claire Randall (Catriona Balfe) after she mysteriously traveled back in time from the 1940s to the 18th century Scotland where she meets Highland warrior Jaimie Fraser (Heughan). Season 3 picks up 20 years after Claire left Jaimie prior to the Battle of Culloden.
Starz previously revealed that the series will continue for two more seasons, with storylines to be based on Gabaldon's "Voyager" and "Drums of Autumn" novels.
The third season of "Outlander" is set to premiere next year, but Starz has yet to announce a definitive launch date.
