In a recent sit-down interview with People, Heughan revealed the new storyline will span two decades and various areas in the world will be explored. "In this season, we span over 20 years—we go to Scotland, Jamaica and England and also end up in North Carolina, so it's a real adventure," he said. According to the actor, they also filmed a few scenes the crew didn't even know about. "I was like, 'Oh my God. What are you doing?' So there's going to be some surprises and really dramatic, epic scenes," he added.

Although the series will feature a huge time jump, Heughan assured fans that Jaimie and Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) signature hairstyles won't change in any way. Since their hair is "very much a part of the show," he explained that Jaimie's luscious curls and Claire's unkempt locks won't be going anywhere.

New characters will be entering the picture next season, including Lord John Grey. Previously established by a younger character in the show, Lord John will now be portrayed by actor David Berry. Based on Diana Gabaldon's novels, Lord John plays a significant role in the third installment. Gabaldon also believes that he could certainly star in a spinoff series of his own.

"I think that would be a fabulous basis for a series, even more so because Lord John's adventures are more episodic than the 'Outlander' ones," the author told The Hollywood Reporter. She further explained that if Starz decided to pick up a program focused on Lord John, it would be similar to BBC's "Sherlock," in the sense that it will be shot in shorter pieces. "I think it could turn out well if Starz wanted to do that," she continued.

The third season of "Outlander" premieres sometime next year on Starz.
