One Direction member Harry Styles is set to appear in the upcoming World War 2 action-thriller film to be directed by Christopher Nolan, "Dunkirk." Variety reported that the singer will star alongside British newcomer actor, Fionn Whitehead.

"Dunkirk," which tells the story of the British military evacuation of the French city of the same name in 1940, will mark Styles's and Whitehead's acting debut. The cast ensemble of "Dunkirk" also includes Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh.

In an exclusive report of Variety last December, Nolan was confirmed to direct and produce the film along with his longtime partner Emma Thomas.

"We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time," Creative Development and Worldwide Production president Greg Silverman said.

"'Dunkirk' is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen."

They held an extensive casting search with Warner Bros. and the entertainment website Deadline was the first to report the possibility of Styles to take a role in the movie after the screening process.

"Dunkirk" will be shot on Imax 65 mm and 65 mm large format film combination. The production group plans to hold the shooting at different places where the actual events of the war took place, and is set to begin in May.

"Dunkirk" hits theaters on July 21, 2017.

Styles, 22, joined the group One Direction in 2010 after his first stint in the entertainment scene via Britain's Got Talent. The band was proven to be a global hit, which has released five successful studio albums and held sold-out concerts all over the world. Their success and fame spawned a documentary film about the group entitled "One Direction: This Is Us," which grossed $68 million worldwide.

The band is currently on a one-year break while each of the members focus on their solo projects. Styles has also been rumored to act in the TV Series "Scream Queens" for its second season.
