'Once Upon a Time' season 5 recap, spoilers: Who woke Dorothy from a sleeping spell? EP weighs in on the show's new couple

Last Sunday's episode of "Once Upon a Time" season 5 was nothing short of interesting, with many unexpected plot twists and turns.

"Ruby Slippers" featured Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Mulan's (Jamie Chung) journey to search the former's wolf pack. While doing so, they chanced upon Dorothy (Teri Reeves) along with her dog Toto. The showrunners previously announced that an LGBT couple will be seen in the season. In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, series creator Eddy Kitsis mentioned earlier in the season that a gay couple will be introduced. "We wanted to tell it no differently than we would with Robin and Regina or Snow and Charming. We just wanted to tell a love story," he said. "For us, it's a love story like any other and it's something we're excited about."

Fans guessed that it would be Aurora (Sarah Bolger) and Mulan, since Aurora already revealed her romantic feelings for Mulan in season three. However, it ended up to be Dorothy and Ruby. The two talked about shared family issues which seemed to have made them fall for each other. Dorothy was put under a sleep spell by the Wicked Witch while they were after Zelena, leading Ruby to give Dorothy a "True Love's kiss."

In a recent statement, co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis addressed the LGBT influence in the story. "True Love's kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning. This past Sunday's episode was just another example of how in a fairy tale, as in life, love is love," the statement reads via The Siver Times.

Meanwhile, the next episode might give focus on an evil twin or a fight with a wicked sister. As of now, ABC has yet to release an official synopsis for "Sisters."
