North Korea recently released offensive comments regarding U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, calling him a "wolf donning the mask of sheep" and a "hideous lantern jaw."

The comments were made by the Korean Central News Agency, considered to be the mouthpiece for the North Korean government, on Wednesday. The media outlet described Kerry as a "hideous lantern jaw," with a government spokesperson adding that Kerry is a "wolf donning the mask of sheep."

"His behavior fully revealed once again, the US inveterate nature as hypocrite who has deceived and mocked mankind with all sorts of gimmicks," the spokesperson added.

This is not the first time North Korea has taken jabs at leaders of other countries. Earlier this year, the North Korean government described President Barack Obama as a "clown" and a "monkey" who belonged in an "African zoo." Additionally, a government spokesperson described South Korean President Park Geun-hye as an "old prostitute."

Political critics suggest these recent anti-American sentiments were created as the U.S. practices its annual summer drills with South Korea. Although both the U.S. and South Korea describe the drills as defensive, North Korea has, for the past several years, seen the drills as threatening.

North Korea called on its neighbor and the U.S. to call off its drills this year, threatening to "mercilessly open the strongest […] pre-emptive strike" if the countries go through with their drills.

A high-ranking South Korean military leader responded by saying "If the North commits a provocative act, we would retaliate strongly."
