Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom in the movie " Nightcrawler" which is due for release today, Oct. 31.

The film reportedly has the edge among other films being shown in theaters this week. It is currently tracking to earn in the range of $10-11 million this Halloween weekend.

The film deals with the transformation of a petty criminal into a tabloid reporter who specializes in capturing videos and photos of victims of murder, accidents and other violent incidents. Gyllenhaal's portrayal of Bloom has been receiving rave reviews since the film was shown to reviewers.

In the film, Bloom exhibits a tenacious willingness to weasel his way into any apartment or accident site and film the wounded and dead. He even has no qualms about rearranging their bodies to create a better photo or video. This behavior naturally culminates with him manufacturing murder and mayhem to suit his needs.

In its review of the movie, Rolling Stone notes that Gyllenhaal's performance was "creepy and scarily brilliant" and "is guaranteed to make people choke on any laughs that they are able to muster."

Gyllenhaal delivers a "poisonously potent performance, complete with twitches and morbid excitement," the review says.

Rounding up the stellar cast in "Nightcrawler" is Rene Russo, who plays the role of Nina, a TV news director; Bill Paxton, who plays Joe Loder; and Riz Ahmed, who plays Rick, an intern hired by Bloom.

The film will have to beat "Ouija" if it wants to take the number one spot in the American box office.

However, Variety notes that "Nightcrawler" is expected to land in the number one spot as "Ouija" is projected to fall off steeply in its second week. The news source also adds that this Halloween is a death zone for movies as it falls on a Friday, a day when many people will prefer to spend trick-or-treating.
