Some reviewers, however, have given the film moderate ratings. Among them is The Guardian which describes it as a "surreal fantasy." This review focuses on the cameos by various actors including Dan Stevens as Sir Lancelot and Rebel Wilson who plays Tilly, the museum guard at the British Museum. It also mentions Robin Williams who delivered his last performance in the film as Teddy Roosevelt.

The New York Times says this could be the last film in the franchise, describing it as a "quest for immortality." This is true at least for the exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History after the tablet that ensures their nightly resurrection deteriorates and causes them to act strangely. Then it falls on Larry (Ben Stiller) to travel to the British Museum and unravel the mystery behind the tablet. There he meets Pharoh Merenkahre (Ben Kingsley). However, the plan to restore the tablet hits a snag when Sir Lancelot steals it and tries to find Guinevere, which he fails to do.

The NYT review also mentions the subplot about Larry's relationship with his son who has just graduated from high school and wants to become a DJ instead of going to college, describing it as a lesson on independence.

The fact that this could be the last film in the Night of Museum franchise is also mentioned by Variety in its review. It describes the film as "devoid of surprises." However, the film's cast including cowboy Jedediah (Owen Wilson) and Octavius (Steve Coogan), who plays a Roman general, gets special mention.

The New York Daily News brands the film as "surprisingly mellow" even though the plot is fashioned around a race against time to save the tablet from deteriorating.
