The Nexus 6 is due to hit the market this month, and it comes with a bigger screen than the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note 4, posing a stiff challenge to both Apple and Samsung.

The Wall Street Journal notes that "in 2011, phablets accounted for 1 percent of global smartphone shipments. But this year, they make up 24 percent of the market," showing the increasing demand and influence of the larger smartphone devices.

This trend has forced Apple to launch the iPhone 6 Plus last month, and now Google has responded to the challenge with its new Nexus 6.

Neil Mawston, an analyst at Strategy Analytic, has said, "The phablet wars are in full effect and vendors need any possible edge they can get," The Wall Street Journal.

The Nexus 6 was codenamed Shamu after the killer whale, and it has lived up to the hype, with a massive 6 inch screen.

As for specs, the smartphone will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM. It also has a 13-megapixel rear facing camera, a 3,200 mAh battery and will come with the latest Android L operating system.

As for the price of the Nexus 6, also undercuts the iPhone 6 Plus and the Note 4 by a large chalk. The Nexus 6 is significantly more expensive than the original cheaper Nexus series from Google, but you get what you pay for, and this new device is a massive advance from those original devices. The price is also still well lower than the iPhone 6 Plus and Note 4.

The Nexus 6 will be price at $649 for the 32 GB version and $699 for the 64 GB off contract. The device also comes in Midnight Blue, or Cloud White.
