The last episode in the final season of "Newsroom" proved to be unnecessary as the show had already gone into the sunset during its penultimate outing which saw the death of Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston).

In its last hour, the show from creator Aaron Sorkin proved that on television there is no such thing as a sure bet when it comes to retaining audience interest.

Titled "What Kind of Day Has It Been," the finale focused on the funeral for Skinner and how he had influenced the life of others around him when he was still alive. There were plenty of flashbacks, one of which showed how Skinner, along with MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), maneuvered Will (Jeff Daniels) into the spotlight on News Night. It also showed that Mac was persuaded to accept the executive producer's post when Skinner told her that she brought out "best in Will."

Then Mac asked her friend Jim Harper (John Gallagher, Jr.) to join the team at News Night after getting inspired upon reading a book gifted to her by Skinner.

The series then focused on current events surrounding Skinner's funeral and Mac's discovery that she is pregnant. Then Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda) convinced Lucas Pruit (B. J. Novak) to allow Mac to take over as the director of ACN News, which he finally did after Lansing pointed out that he has a bad image problem that he needed to fix.

The arrival of Neal (Dev Patel) from Venezuela was then dealt with without much fanfare. Entertainment Weekly described it as "more insult than honor." Neal then promptly rescued ACN Digital from Bree Dorrit and shut down the website.

Skinner's funeral came next after which the entire team went back to produce another "News Night." The finale -- fittingly to some and unfittingly to others -- ended back in the studio with the screen fading out to black as Will started reading the news.
