'NCIS' season 14 news, updates and spoilers: Premiere date speculated to fall sometime in late September, show to move forward despite veteran Michael Weatherly's departure

Long-running police procedural drama series "NCIS" recently wrapped up its landmark 13th season, and fans can only wish that season 14 premieres very soon.

The emotional season 13 finale titled "Family First" saw the departure of actor Michael Weatherly, who portrayed the character of Special Agent Tony DiNozzo for 13 years. In the episode, Tony cited that the reason behind his departure was for him to take care of his daughter with Ziva David. Despite the show losing one of its veteran characters, the top-rating series will definitely continue to move forward.

Showrunner Gary Glasberg previously spoke to Deadline concerning Weatherly's exit and how the plan to go on without him. "Michael is and was a huge part of our family behind the scenes but everybody wishes him well with this huge opportunity he has," Glasberg said. "And we welcome some new people and the great guests that we'll continue to have. We'll show up for work come July and start all over again."

In terms of the changes after Weatherly left, the showrunner promised that viewers will still see the show they've come to love over the years. "NCIS as a show, as a franchise, doesn't change," he added. "The humor is still there, the pathos is still there, the human mystery, the fun in the storytelling. At the end of the day we move forward, look ahead, find new characters, new dynamics, new interplay in the way this family functions. The tone won't change."

Sarah Clarke, who plays the role of FBI agent Tess Monroe, and Duane Henry, who portrays the character of MI-6 agent Clayton Reeves, are speculated to be promoted as series regulars to fill the void left by Weatherly in the team. As of now, the network has yet to announce an official release date for "NCIS" season 4. Based on the previous seasons, the shop will likely return to the small screen this fall, and the premiere date is expected to be sometime in late September.
