'Narcos' season 3 spoilers, plot news: Who will take over reins after Pablo Escobar's death?

The story of Pablo Escobar's (Wagner Moura) rise and fall has already concluded, but "Narcos" is far from over. Although Netflix has yet to renew the critically-acclaimed series, fans are looking forward to seeing the next protagonist take over the reins in the possible season 3.
There are speculations that the Cali Cartel and its top men, Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela and Helmer "Pacho" Herrera, will headline the next installment. Based on the history books, the Cali Cartel picks up exactly where the Medellin Cartel left off. The notorious group eventually became the most powerful drug organization not only in Latin America but in the whole world as well.
Compared to the Medellins, whose entire system revolved around Escobar, the Calis used small groups of people who make up "close-knit cells." They provide a greater efficiency when exchanging cash and information which is partly the reason why the drug ring became very successful. During the height of their operation, the Calis reportedly raked in over $7 billion per year.
In an interview with IndieWire, executive producer Eric Newman explained the nature of the series and how future seasons will play out. "From the very beginning, from our earliest days of talking about this, it was Medellin, into Cali, into Mexico," he said. "The band plays on. We certainly look at parallels in the world with terrorism, where we never deal with the source of terrorism. We deal with 'let's cut the head off this monster'—in the most recent case, Osama bin Laden. By the time he's gone, he's already out of the game and there are new guys who are even worse. That's really what the show is about."
After Pablo's death in the finale, fans are left hanging on Javier Peña's (Pedro Pascal) fate. The finale saw him return to the U.S. and recruited by the DEA for a new operation. According to Newman, he still has yet to look into Javier's role in taking down Cali, adding that he'd be happy to work with him "in some way."
"Narcos" seasons 1 and 2 are currently available for streaming via Netflix.
