'Narcos' season 3 spoilers, plot news: EP hints 4 characters to lead Cali Cartel; Boyd Holbrook hints possible return as Steve Murphy

The sophomore run of Netflix's hit drama "Narcos" may have ended with Pablo Escobar's (Wagner Moura) death, but it also launched the storyline of a new cartel taking over the reins in the upcoming third season.
Season 2 left off with the series wrapping up Escobar's two-season arc by re-creating the famous 1993 Medellin rooftop shootout that led to the demise of the real-life drug kingpin. The finale also set up how the drug war will continue with the Cali Cartel, Escobar's rising rival that had been waiting to take over all throughout the season.
The show recently earned a back-to-back renewal from the streaming giant, and a video announcing the news was released. In the clip, Pablo's image was replaced with Gilberto (Damian Alcazar), leading fans to speculate that he may be the new protagonist. Although executive producer Eric Newman confirmed that Gilberto plays a significant role in season 3, he also mentioned three other prominent figures in the Cali Cartel which will each have important roles as well.
"Unlike Escobar, who had positioned himself as an outlaw, Cali was very much a part of the system," he explained. "While Escobar was a single-cell organism, they were a complex, multicelled organism." Possibly taking the lead in the next installment are Rodriguez brothers Gilberto and Miguel (Francisco Denis), Pacho Herrera (Alberto Ammann) and a fourth known as "Chepe" who has yet to be introduced in the program.
With a bigger threat taking control, the DEA's job is far from over. Agent Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook), along with his colleague Javier Pena (Pedro Pascal), played a huge part in ending Pablo's reign but as of now, it remains unclear if they will return. In an interview, Holbrook gave an update on what lies ahead for his character. "We're still working it out," he stated. "Steve didn't retire from the DEA until, I believe, two years ago. He was very active in the DEA for a long time so I'll leave that up to you to find out. If nothing, I think this show has an incredible opportunity now because Pablo's not around, but that's the really interesting thing."
The third installment of "Narcos" is expected to premiere next year on Netflix.
