After two seasons focusing on the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, Netflix's riveting drama "Narcos" recently earned a back-to-back renewal from the streaming giant.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the cartel drama will go on for two more years. The announcement came just days after the entire season 2 was made available for streaming. Netflix subscribers were already given a clue when the final moments of the season 2 finale suggested that DEA agent Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) will be focusing on another Columbian gang, the Cali Cartel.

Fans were initially concerned for the show's fate when it was confirmed that Escobar's story will end in season 2. Now that the series officially moves forward without the notorious drug kingpin, season 3 will center on a number of significant figures from the Cali cartel.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Eric Newman shared details on who might take over the reins next season. "There are four Cali godfathers: brothers Gilberto and Miguel (Francisco Denis), Pacho Herrera (Alberto Ammann), all of whom we've met, and then there is a fourth named "Chepe," who is a sort of fascinating and colorful guy," he hinted. In real life, all four men met bad endings, but Newman stressed that "it's getting there that's fun." Although he did not confirm if one or all of them will be the protagonist/s in season 3, he did say they will all play a "big part" in season 3.

Instead of completely reinventing the series, the EP added that the upcoming installment will be a "schematic sequel." Newman said he plans on introducing a "fair amount" of new characters while still maintaining a good balance between the old and new faces. Since the show is a multiple narrative, he also hinted "a number of new stories that hopefully will be captivating."

The third installment of "Narcos" is expected to premiere sometime next year on Netflix.
