Police officers in Spanish Fork, Utah, said a mysterious voice called out to them, saying, "Help me," that led them to discover a baby trapped inside a car which crashed into a river on Friday night.

"We've gotten together and just talkin' about it, and all four of us can swear that we heard somebody inside the car saying, 'Help,'" police officer Jared Warner told KSL.com.

Lynn Jennifer Groesbeck, with her baby Lily, was driving her car to Springville from her parents' house in Salem when the accident happened. The mother was killed but the baby survived the ordeal for 14 hours inside the upside-down car submerged in the freezing river before the police found the vehicle and rescued her.

When the police officers flipped the car, what they only saw was the dead mom and the baby.

"We're not exactly sure where that voice came from," Warner said.

The 18-month-old baby was rescued and was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition.

The car was discovered by a fisherman at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The four police officers who went down to the river said they heard the voice. "We were down on the car and a distinct voice says, 'Help me, help me,'" Dewitt said.

Officer Tyler Beddoes said, "It wasn't just something that was just in our heads. To me it was plain as day cause I remember hearing a voice."

He added: "I think it was Dewitt who said, 'We're trying. We're trying our best to get in there.' How do you explain that? I don't know."

Beddoes thought that "there was some other help there, getting us where we needed to be."

"I ended up with the child in my arms and I just ran up the hill and into the ambulance and we drove off, started CPR and anything we could do to just save her," Warner said.

Groesbeck's sister, Jill Sanderson, said Lily's condition was improving. "She is doing remarkably well considering the circumstance. The doctors have been hopeful so far," she said. "We would like to express our appreciation to the Spanish Fork rescue team for saving the baby's life."

Groesbeck was the youngest in a brood of five and was enrolled at the Prove College in Utah.
