Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson -- collectively known as the British pop group One Direction -- shone brightest during MTV European Music Awards (EMA) last Sunday.

One Direction received three major awards: Best Pop Act, Best Live Act, and Biggest Fans. They also won Best UK & Ireland Act.

However, the globally popular group wasn't able to attend the MTV EMA at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow. Instead, the production showed a video clip of One Direction to make sure that fans would receive their thanks for all the support.

Another no-show at the ceremony who won awards was Katy Perry, for Best Look and Best Video Act for "Dark Horse."

Other winners were Justin Bieber who was given the Best Male Act and Best Canadian Act awards.

Best Female Act went to Ariana Grande. The Best Song Act was for "Problem," which featured Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.

There was also a Best Spanish Male Act which went to Enrique Iglesias. He also received an award for Best World Stage Performance.

Meanwhile, Best Worldwide Act - Southeast Asia/China & Hong Kong/Taiwan - and Best International Singer went to the Chinese singer Bibi Zhou.

Best Hip Hop Act went to Nicki Minaj who performed her new hit song "Anaconda," and also acted as the ceremony's host.

Best Alternative Group Act was awarded to Thirty Seconds to Mars. The Best Rock Group Act went to Linkin Park. The Best Electronic Act award was received by Scottish DJ Calvin Harris.

Finally, acknowledging that great music never grows old in the public's mind, the Global Icon Award was given to rock stalwart and former reality star Ozzy Osbourne.
