ABC's top-rating comedy series "Modern Family" is now heading to its eighth season, but what can fans expect from the three completely different families when the show returns this Fall?

Season 7 left off with Mitch (Jesse Tyler-Ferguson), Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) out of town for a mini-vacation while Claire (Julie Bowen) and Jay (Ed O'Neill) are continuously working out their respective careers. Haley (Sarah Hyland) is still dealing with Andy's (Adam DeVine) departure, and despite Andy's promise to her, it remains to be seen what lies ahead for their complicated relationship. The story for next season is expected to pick up exactly where everything ended, along with new characters to be introduced.

ABC greenlit a season renewal for "Modern Family" back in March, but the creators are well aware that they are in the home stretch. In an interview with Deadline, co-creator Steve Levitan talked about an end in sight for the series. "I think my personal goal at this point would be 10 seasons," Levitan said. "I don't know if it's attainable or not; I think we'll have to look at it every year, and if we feel like we're just running out of things to say then it will be time to make that tough call."

According to co-creator Christopher Lloyd, making the mockumentary series gets more difficult every year because there are fewer stories to tell. "... we still stumble into stories where we go, 'Wow, we could have told this in the first or second season.' It was out there, and we just didn't think of it until now," he explained. "The greatest pressure we feel is not to betray what we started out doing, which is delivering a funny, quality show that reflects real lives and real family emotions."

"Modern Family" season 8 premieres Sept. 21, Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
