'Modern Family' season 8 spoilers: Luke and Manny run for senior class president; Guest star Martin Short becomes Haley's new mentor in episode 3

The Dunphys and Pritchetts will be up against each other in the upcoming episode of ABC's hit comedy series "Modern Family" season 8.
Titled "Blindsided," tonight's episode will explore two families going head-to-head because of a school matter. According to the official synopsis, the Dunphys and Pritchetts are going head-to-head when Luke (Nolan Gould) realizes that running for senior class president against Manny (Rico Rodriguez) will give him the best chance to get into college. With everyone in a competitive mood, Jay (Ed O'Neil), Gloria (Sofia Vergara) and Claire (Julie Bowen) will take charge as their kids' campaign managers.
Meanwhile, Phil (Ty Burrell) will attempt to be involved in Haley's (Sarah Hyland) decision to start her own promotion business. To help Haley's new project, the Dunphy patriarch will introduce her to marketing guru Merv Schechter (guest star Martin Short). In the Tucker-Pritchett home, Cam (Eric Stonestreet) learns that his star football player is moving away. In an attempt to keep the player from leaving, Cam will make a rash decision bound to make home life a bit cramped for Mitch (Jesse Tyler-Ferguson), Cam and Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).
Coach Cam might be leaving it all in the field, but he certainly won't leave everyone on the field. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Christopher Lloyd hinted that the football star player's arrival will significantly affect Cam's family. "Cam has his best football season this year," said Lloyd, "but it's going to turn on one particular player that he develops a complicated relationship with, which should be a funny, new dynamic for us to see."
As for the introduction of Short in the story, Lloyd revealed that he will serve as a mentor to Phil's eldest daughter. "Phil happens to know this guy that he considers a guru in the advertising and promotions world—an old-school kind of guy—so he arranges a meeting with this guy to try to [get him to be] a mentor to Haley," he added.
The eighth season of "Modern Family" airs every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
