'Minecraft' movie release date, news: 'The Office' star Steve Carrell in talks for lead role

"Minecraft" was a hit among children and adults when it came out back in 2009. A movie is reportedly in the works, and "The Office" star Steve Carell is in talks to take the lead role in the movie.
According to Variety, Carell will be signing on to a picture that will be helmed by Rob McElhenney. The director is known for his work on the hit comedy series, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," a show which he helped create and write and in which he also stars as Mac.
The script for the film will be written by McElhenney as well, and he will be getting help from Jason Fuchs, who worked on the screenplay for DC Entertainment's upcoming "Wonder Woman" solo movie.
With Carell in talks to play the lead and McElhenney set to write and direct, it's safe to assume that this movie will be centered more on comedy. Carell is probably best known for his role of idiot boss Michael Scott in CBS' U.S. version of "The Office," but he has since moved on to movies, most recently starring in Woody Allen's "Café Society" and Fox Searchlight's upcoming "Battle of the Sexes." Carell also shows a penchant for serious movies by working on roles in "Foxcatcher" and "The Big Short."
Carell has worked on a bunch of animated movies tool, lending his voice to characters in "Horton Hears a Who," "Over the Hedge," and the "Despicable Me" franchise.
The movie will be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures who got the rights to make the film shortly after the success of "The Lego Movie." The "Minecraft" game was developed by Indie game company Mojang AB and it plays out like a virtual Lego game as well, with players building anything they can out of pixelated blocks.
"Minecraft" is set for release on May 25, 2019.
