Former Arkansas Governor and potential 2016 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee recently spoke out regarding religious liberty in the U.S., suggesting that Christianity is on the brink of being criminalized in America.

Huckabee made his comments at the recent National Hispanic Convention in Texas, suggesting that religious persecution is real in the U.S. and more must be done to protect Americans' religious liberties.

"We are living in perilous times where people who are Christian are on the brink of being criminalized for their convictions," Huckabee said at the event put on by the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, as reported by The Christian Post.

"You are told that if you continue to hold to your Christian witness and belief that you ought to be put out of business, that you are going to be fined, you are going to be punished," Huckabee added.

There have been multiple court cases relating to religious freedom and accusations of discrimination in the past months, most notably the case involving Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes By Melissa bakery in Oregon, who were fined $130,000 for refusing to provide their business's services for a gay wedding.

At the convention, Huckabee also spoke out againsta same-sex marriage, a topic which is currently before the Supreme Court.

"I respect the courts, but the Supreme Court is only that — the supreme of the courts. It is not the supreme being. It cannot overrule God," he reportedly told the audience.

"When it comes to prayer, when it comes to life, and when it comes to the sanctity of marriage, the court cannot change what God has created," Huckabee added.
