'Miitomo' news, updates: to release in US as Nintendo's first mobile app

Nintendo has something new to offer aside from the gaming consoles and portables, as it has recently launched in the U.S. its first-ever mobile application called "Miitomo." The smartphone app was released on March 31 in the U.S. and is expected to be released in other countries shortly, although there is still no official list of countries who will be receiving Nintendo's latest offering. Miitomo's international launching came after the company first debuted the app in Japan earlier in March.
There are some reports as shown in Tech Crunch that United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are the countries that will also have the chance to get the first experience with the Miitomo app, aside from the U.S. and Japan. Russia, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Luxembourg and Spain are the next countries who will receive the app.
The rare venture of Nintendo in the mobile app world has proven to be a success at this early, as Miitomo has garnered a total number of downloads of up to one million counts in Japan alone. This warm reception from mobile users has caused Nintendo's corporate stocks to increase by more than eight percent.
Yibada reported that Nintendo's latest mobile app offering is not the usual smartphone game. Miitomo will feature the same animated avatars that were first prepared during the launching of Wii consoles. With Miitomo, mobile users who have downloaded the app can get these avatars and customize them to whatever form they like. The customized avatars will be known as "Miis" that will include the facial features, hairstyles, clothes and accessories, among others.
As reported by The Verge, Miitomo was first announced last October as a result of collaboration between Nintendo ad DeNA. It does not feature some of Nintendo's famous characters but it will be a combination of Wii U's own social network and a popular 3DS game called "Tomadachi Life." With a customized avatar, Miitomo users can interact with friends by sending them messages and playing mini-games together.
Smartphone users can have the Miitomo app for free.
