Microsoft Surface Phone release date, news, specs rumors: Microsoft's next flagship phone could arrive as early as January 2017

Microsoft has been successful for the past several years in launching the Surface family of devices. From the top-of-the-line hybrid laptops to the recent all-in-one (AIO) desktop computer, the Surface label has continued to expand over the year. Many tech enthusiasts believe that since the Redmond-based tech giant has yet to succeed in conquering the smartphone market, it is possible that Microsoft will expand the Surface family to that area. With this, it is rumored that the Surface Phone will come to life very soon, but the question, for now, is when will Microsoft's next flagship handset be released.
It is quite of a bold move for Microsoft to expand the Surface lineup with the Surface Phone, although it can be a wise move given the success of their previous Surface devices such as the Surface Pro. Latest reports suggest that the Surface Phone will be released next year in three variants. This next flagship smartphone from Microsoft is expected to surpass the previous Lumia series, which has received lukewarm reception among the gadget enthusiasts.
There is no certainty about the release of the Surface Phone, but according to a report from Mobile & Apps, the much-awaited handset could arrive as early as January next year. It is likely that Microsoft has already been working on the Surface Phone, designing it to have a special all-metal body. Being a member of the Surface family, the Surface Phone is also expected to keep the trademark design features of the current Surface gadgets.
Some of the interesting features of the Microsoft Surface Phone include the premium 20-megapixel Carl Zeiss rear camera, accompanied by special add-ons such as proximity sensor, compass, fingerprint reader, and even a barometer. It is likely that all three variants of the Surface Phone will be powered by the new generation Intel Atom X3 processor. It is also expected to run the latest Windows 10 OS update.
The RAM capacity of the Surface Phone is expected to go as low as 3 GB for the low-tier variant, while the high-tier models are expected to boast at least 8GB RAM. The base internal storage capacity of the Surface Phone will be around 512GB.
Likewise, PC Tablet reported that the Surface Phone will feature the new Microsoft Continuum app feature, allowing the users to connect their handsets to a larger screen display such as television sets.
