Michigan Mayor to Pass Out 'In God We Trust' Posters
A Michigan mayor who recently lost a court fight with an atheist group has announced his plans to hand out "In God We Trust" posters at a public facility.
Warren Mayor James Fouts recently announced to local media outlets that he will start a campaign by handing out "In God We Trust" posters to passerby.
Recently, Fouts lost a court battle after he was sued by the ACLU, Freedom From Religion Foundation and Americans United regarding their decision to place a "Reason Station" at Warren's Civic Center, a publically-operated building.
The "reason station" will reportedly go next to a prayer station operated by a local church.
Fouts recently told local media outlets that his decision to pass out "In God We Trust" posters was made, in some degree, as a response to the recent court ruling that will allow the "reason station" to be erected at the Civic Center.
"Obviously, I was concerned about the court order that forced the city of Warren to have a reason station within our city hall atrium," Fouts said in the statement to CandG News.
"The prayer station had been functioning for years without any problems or any controversy. They're now allowed to have an atheist station under the euphemistic guise of a reason station."
When Fouts originally denied the local atheist group their "reason station," he wrote in a letter that their "freedom from religion" argument was not protected under the U.S. Constitution.
"Freedom From Religion is not a religion," Fouts wrote to the atheist group last year. "It has no tenets, no place of worship and no congregation. To my way of thinking, your group is strictly an anti-religion group intending to deprive all organized religions of their constitutional freedoms or at least discourage the practice of religions. The city of Warren cannot allow this."
