'Maze Runner 3: Death Cure' release date delay update: Dylan O'Brien continues recovery; lead actor to start filming next year due to other projects?

Actor Dylan O'Brien may not return to the set of "Maze Runner 3: Death Cure" sometime in the near future to work on another action film.
According to reports, production for "Maze Runner 3: Death Cure" had to be delayed after lead actor O'Brien sustained serious injuries on set earlier this year. The accident happened when the actor was filming a stunt scene which involved a train. The production staff immediately brought O'Brien to a nearby hospital due to his fatal injuries. After the accident in March, the actor sustained minor lacerations, several broken bones, a head concussion as well as some fractures in his face.
Fortunately, O'Brien had a fast recovery and is now ready to reprise his role as Thomas in the film franchise. He is also back on the set of MTV's "Teen Wolf" as Stiles for the show's eighth and final season. Despite being physically prepared for "Maze Runner 3: Death Cure," however, O'Brien is currently prioritizing another project titled "American Assassin"—an action feature film with Michael Keaton and Sanaa Lathan.
Fans recently had their first look at O'Brien's character Mitch Rapp in the said film, leading them to become ecstatic to see the young actor well enough to return to work. As Deadline points out, O'Brien will portray the role of a CIA black ops recruit under the supervision of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Keaton).
Together, Rapp and Hurley were enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Lathan) to look into cases of random attacks on both civilian and military targets. Their investigation will lead them to have a joint mission with Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to take down an operative (Taylor Kitsch) who plans to start a world war in the Middle East.
O'Brien will reportedly resume filming "Maze Runner 3: Death Cure" next year.
"Maze Runner 3: Death Cure" was initially slated to hit the big screen on Feb. 17, 2017. but as per IMDB, the film's U.S. premiere is now scheduled on Jan. 12, 2018.
