Netflix released the sophomore season of "Marco Polo" in its entirety earlier this month, and the third season can't come soon enough for fans. Unfortunately, the streaming giant has yet to announce if the historical fantasy drama will be renewed.

The first two seasons saw the focus shift from the main protagonist Marco Polo toward the other characters. Season 2 highlighted Kublai Khan's effort to destroy the remaining Song dynasty and the introduction of Prester John. If the show will move forward to season 3, it would be interesting to see the story explore the strong female characters' capabilities. In spite of the overwhelming importance given to male characters, giving the females more power would be a good twist in the series.

According to spoiler reports, there are several women in "Marco Polo" which should have more exposure in the future. Empress Chabi (Joan Chen) is one of the women to watch out for particularly because of her intriguing personality. As the wife of Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong), Chabi is powerful in her own right which makes her one of the critics' favorites in the show. Chen's portrayal shows viewers that a queen is not only a consort but also has the ability to

Season 2 newcomer Lotus (Michelle Yeoh) also has a great potential to have a bigger story arc in the coming season. Also known as The Handmaiden, Lotus is responsible for protecting the child emperor of the fallen Han dynasty but her past links her to a popular character which completely complicates her mission. It turns out that she is in love with Hundred Eyes, and since she can't save the young emperor by killing her ex-lover, she decides to leave. There are certainly more layers to see in her character and fans can only hope to see more of her next season.

As of now, Netflix has yet to announce if "Marco Polo" will be renewed for a third season.
